Providing quality of life for all our residents.
We use a Palliative Care approach, which is about the quality of life as well as about treatment of illness. This is a new approach, and we believe that this is the way forward for developing the care that people want.
Palliative Care is not just about care of people with a terminal disease. It is about getting the best out of life despite the limitations that an illness might bring. It is usually associated with cancer care, but it can be applied to a wide variety of illnesses. It means “relieving without curing”.
Norwood House staff are taking the lead in a new system of Palliative Care, called the Gold Standard Framework.
The Gold Standard Framework is recommended by the Department of Health and was originally developed for use by GP practices. It is now recognised as the right approach in caring for older people with long term conditions.
The aim of palliative care is to manage and reduce the symptoms of life- limiting conditions as far as possible, and to provide the best quality of life that we can.
Most importantly, while we seek to improve the quality of life, we try to look at what each person means by quality, instead of what we might think they want.
